However, the human mind will prevail when we realize that we don’t really need many of the things that we considered essential.
Instead, we have learned to take advantage of our wonderful region and the many things it has to offer. We don’t need to travel overseas on vacation, we don’t need to buy that overseas luxury item or imported off-season food just because we can, New Zealand has almost everything we need, especially when it comes to food and drink.

The end of 2021 marks the end of my 21st year of writing a regular column for the Nelson Courier, and I’m always amazed how easy it was to find great people who make great products to write about.
It is only natural that during this period some of the businesses I spoke about were sold or closed, but there are always new people with new ideas to take their place – and the quality of the various foods. and drinks produced and served here seem to be improving. every year.
There will be more economic hardships ahead as we adjust to the fact that fewer tourists are visiting our area, so it is important to remember what is important to us as a community.
Many companies that are struggling to survive have worked incredibly hard for many years to make sure that they give us a great experience, they may also employ you, you, your neighbors or your friends so it is essential that we support these companies today, tomorrow and in the months to come or they will disappear.
As shown last year, we don’t need to compromise on quality when buying and buying locally, our tourism industry delivers world-class experiences while our food and beverage producers make products as good, if not better, than many imported products. high-end products.
Nelson Vineyards have won numerous awards over the past 12 months but one really stands out for me, Seifried Family Estate winning numerous awards for their 2020 Seifried Family Estate Nelson Sauvignon Blanc including a medal of gold at the Royal Easter Show Wine Awards 2021, the Guala Closures NZ trophy for the Sauvignon Blanc champion at the same awards, the Mainfreight trophy for the champion export wine, also at the Royal Easter Show Wine Awards 2021 and scoring 95-96 points per l ‘Oz Clarke in the UK among the highlights of this wine.

Then there are the large number of new artisan producers appearing at the Saturday Market, Nelson’s Farmers Market, Isel Market, Motueka Market, and various events in the area. These are people who take their future into their own hands and create great products that you and I can try.
Let us not forget our beer and cider producers who also make world class products in this beautiful region using locally grown hops or the hard workers who grow fresh fruits and vegetables, stone fruits, pome fruits. and olives to turn into world-class olive oils.
There are people who make beautiful sausages, smoked fish, roast coffee beans, produce delicious mustards and sauces, make artisan chocolates, perfectly fry clean crisps, grind peanuts into delicious peanut butter and then there are those who have brought the culinary culture of their country home and bake wonderful French artisan pÃ¢tÃ©s or pancakes and classic lemon meringue pies, cook spicy Thai or Indian dishes and much more.
Besides buying local produce to take home and enjoying many local restaurants, these beautiful tasty products are on their menus, so we get used to not traveling abroad as freely as before, let’s adopt everything that is local.
This year has shown me that despite enormous challenges, producers in this region are able to adapt and maintain very high standards. They deserve your support to make sure they are there for years to come.
